BOKASHI NINJA®

Common questions

Bokashi

What is bokashi?

Bokashi is a Japanese term meaning ‘fermented organic matter’. It is often referred to as a type of ‘composting’ but it is actually an anaerobic fermentation process, resulting in a much different end product than that produced via composting.

What does bokashi do?

Bokashi composting is an anaerobic process that relies on an accelerator spray to ferment kitchen food waste, into a safe soil builder and nutrient-rich fertiliser for your plants.

How does Bokashi Ninja® composting work?

Food waste is layered with Bokashi Ninja® Accelerator Spray in a Bokashi Ninja® bucket. Due to the air-tight bucket and the micro-organisms present in the Bokashi Ninja® spray, the waste ferments. When the bucket is full, the waste is transferred outside and buried beneath the soil or in an outdoor composter to complete the composting process.

What can I put in a Bokashi Ninja®?

You can compost most kitchen food waste including fresh fruit and vegetables, prepared foods, cooked and uncooked meats and fish, cheese, eggs, bread, coffee grinds, teabags, wilted flowers and tissues.

Unlike traditional composting that can’t take food items like meat, dairy, bones, fat, etc., the Bokashi Ninja® can!

What can’t I put in my Bokashi Ninja®?

No liquids – water, milk, juice or oil. No paper, plastic wrap or large bones.

What happens in the Bokashi Ninja® bucket?

The food wastes supply nutrients that feed the microbes in the Bokashi Ninja® Accelerator Spray. As the food wastes ferment, the microbes produce a variety of beneficial substances. Some of these substances include enzymes, vitamins, amino acids, trace minerals, some plant hormones, and organic acids. The pickling process controls pathogens and damages seeds in the container.

What is bokashi juice?

The bokashi juice is an extract that comes from the tap of the Bokashi Ninja® bucket and is a nutrient rich by-product of the composting process.

How to use bokashi juice?

Bokashi juice must be diluted with water prior to using on your plants. 100:1 ratio, that’s approximately 2 teaspoons for every litre of water.

It’s a good idea to empty the extract every 3-5 days from your Bokashi Ninja®. The amount you obtain will depend on the type of food you have placed in the bucket.

Either diluted in your garden, or pour the concentrate straight down your kitchen or bathroom sink to give it a good clean. You can also pour down toilets and septic systems. It’s a great way to get rid of nasty bacteria.

How long does food waste in the Bokashi Ninja® take to decompose?

The bokashi starts fermenting within 2-3 days. For the best results, it’s a great idea to have two buckets, so that once one bucket is full, you can start filling your second bucket, while you let the first bucket sit to continue fermenting for a couple of weeks before burying in your garden or adding to your outdoor compost heap.

What do I do with my Bokashi Ninja® when it’s full?

Bury it. Feed it to the worms. Put it in a garden compost bin. Gift it to a friend or community garden. Google “community composting” to find local community groups or community gardens in your area or sign up to Sharewaste.com it’s free!

How to bury bokashi waste?

Simply dig a hole in your garden approximately 25cm deep. Add the bokashi waste and mix with the soil. Ensure you cover the waste completely with soil.
TIP: we use gloves when handling the fermented food waste.

Can bokashi be fed to worms?

Gradually the worms will get used to their new diet. And then you can add more bokashi fermented food. When adding fermented food to a worm bin the food needs to be fully fermented so it doesn’t rot. … The worm casings and tea are even more nutrient rich when the worms are fed a bokashi diet.

Does the Bokashi Ninja® bucket smell?

When the lid is on airtight, there is no smell. The fermenting food waste will produce a vinegary odour. That’s when you know it’s doing its job. It also creates a white skin coating around and throughout the fermenting food waste. If your extract is foul smelling, pour the juice down the drain, don’t put on your plants. If the bucket is smelling too much, add more Bokashi Ninja® Accelerant Spray.

What if my bokashi bucket waste goes mouldy?

White mould is good, that’s the fermentation process working. If there’s green or black mould, empty the bin and start again. Use a bit more accelerator spray as required.

What if my bokashi bucket smells?

Add some more Bokashi Ninja® Accelerator Spray on the food waste and make sure your bucket lid is always sealed airtight. You may need to adjust the amount of Accelerator Spray depending on the type of food in your Bokashi Ninja®. Play around until you get to know your Bokashi Ninja®.
